Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

What is ESOS and who is effected?

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for ‘large’ UK organisations. The qualifying criteria can be complex, but put simply, if an organisation has more than 250 employees it is highly likely that it has a requirement to carry out and submit an ESOS assessment every 4 years. The first assessment must be submitted by 5th December 2015.

Assessment Criteria

An ESOS assessment must consider the entire energy used by an organisation over a 12 month period, from buildings, transport and commercial processes. It must identify the areas of significant energy use, and outline cost-effective recommendations for energy efficiency improvements.


The ESOS assessment must gain board level sign off and be verified by a Lead ESOS Assessor. The Lead ESOS Assessor must report compliance to the Environment Agency by 5th December 2015.
